It's a glorious sunny day again. We don't get too many of these up here so I am in shorts and sandals, sitting in the garden, drinking beer. I'm not watching the FA Cup Final. Don't care who wins although if pushed I hope the Chelsea rich kids don't win- if only just to see Terry cry again!
Perhaps I should have included football in the title of this blog as I have chatted probably more about The Beautiful Game than anything else over the last few months.
I was walking the dog this morning over Nuns Moor. The sun was shining, the dog was running around very happy and then we were spotted by the cows that graze there every summer. I think some new ones have arrived because, en masse, they all came running towards us. I put the dog on his lead and legged it through the buttercups to the path and relative safety. The cows stopped, Mooed a bit and went the other way. It was quite scary.
A band I quite like are called Scanners. I caught them about 4 years ago supporting The Wedding Present at the Uni. See if you like them too
Scanners- Raw
Yet another music related blog from a middle aged man who thinks he's got great taste in music and something important to say to the world.

Random Post
Interpol are a band that have made me sit up and take notice since the first time I heard Turn On The Bright Lights. Seen them live just the once. They were pretty damn good. Cool and stylish and obviously in love with Joy Division, intelligent rock music doesn't get better.
I love this song. This is from a show in San Diego in June 2007
Evil- Interpol
They should be bigger than they are maybe the next album will make them superstars. Here's hoping.

Cheering Myself Up
When I am down or feeling pissed off with life and its many vagaries, or I am feeling miserable because I have been reminded by a random phone call of one of the less than glorious periods of my life and the hurt I caused my beloved wife I listen to music to cheer me up.
Listening to music was never better than when it was your favourite band in session on John Peel's show. So perhaps, if like me you love The Wedding Present and you're down this will cheer you up.
MP3 The Wedding Present- Queen Anne
This was from a session they did in September 2004, their first as the reconstituted Wedding Present (or rather Cinerama renamed). If you like this buy Take Fountain where this song ended up. That album, along with Cinerama's Torino are in my opinion the best work Gedge and his band(s) have ever made. Hats off to Simon Cleave the guitarist on both whose ear for a melody and riff is unmatched. Also Kaari Paavola's drumming and percussion were outstanding on these two albums. Buy them , make David Gedge as rich as he deserves to be.

Music Pt 4
I got the Factory Communications Box set for my birthday present. Track 6 Disc 1 is Time Goes By So Slow by The Distractions.
I tell people it was the music of Joy Division and The Buzzcocks that made me choose Manchester as my University. This is true but its also just as true that it was The Distractions' EP " You're Not Going Out Dressed Like That" that persuaded me to go.
Of all the bands I have loved The Distractions reign supreme. In the 4 years I lived in Manchester I saw them 8 times. This is still my record for seeing a band, even including The Wedding Present. They were unpretentious intelligent pop. They were not very good looking (not even Pip Nicholls the gay bass player). They didn't have a "look" but they could play. They were also nice people. Mike Finney the lead singer recognised me from the audience and stopped at a bus stop and gave me a lift home one time after a gig. Which was nice as the bus was late and I was tired and cold.
They released a few singles , recorded one perfect pop album for Island (Nobody's Perfect), one great EP including the wonderful songs Ghost of A Chance and Love is NotFor Me and then broke up. I still miss them, they just pushed all my "pop" buttons
Here is the song that got me hooked, from that original EP that first made me take notice.

Music Part Three
Bill Nelson for those who don't know is a guitar genius. Here are a couple of tracks for you to listen to
MP3 Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape
MP3 Six Strings For Sarah
The first, live track has probably the best guitar solo I have ever heard. Although Bill does great guitar solos this is the best.
The second song was done for a charity Sara's Hope Foundation a local North East based one. Support them by downloading a higher res version of this lovely instrumental.
The two tracks are separated by more than 30 years. Bill still makes music and releases work every year. He has a devoted but small fanbase. He is a great British hero.
